Fueling Business: Coffee or Espresso?

While this is a business-focused blog, there may not be a more important fuel in business than that of coffee. For many of us, coffee is not just a beverage; it's a ritual, an art, and sometimes, a necessity. I personally love it in most forms – including ice cream. I also respect those who treat it like an artform such as Noah Stern.

 

However, in the realm of coffee aficionados, there's an ongoing debate: what is the difference between regular coffee beans and espresso beans? Let's grind down the facts and brew some clarity on this topic.

 

The Bean

Firstly, it's essential to understand that 'regular' and 'espresso' beans come from the same place – the coffee plant. The primary differences lie not in the bean itself, but in the roasting and brewing processes. They are the same!

 

Roasting

Regular Coffee Beans: These beans are generally roasted for a shorter period, leading to a lighter color. This roasting level retains more of the bean's original characteristics and subtle flavors. You can find regular beans ranging from light to medium-dark roasts.

 

Espresso Beans: Espresso beans are often roasted longer, which results in a darker roast. This longer roasting process reduces acidity and increases the perception of body and bitterness. The dark roast also produces that characteristic shiny, oily surface on the beans.

 



Grinding

The grind size of the coffee bean plays a key role in the brewing process. This is why top-end grinders (no, not the club kind), such as Niche, Baratza and Fellow are so important.

 

Regular Coffee Beans: For regular brewing methods like drip or French press, the grind ranges from medium to coarse. This size allows for a slower extraction process, suitable for these brewing methods.

 

Espresso Beans: Espresso requires a very fine grind. The fine grind creates resistance to the water being forced through the coffee, which is essential for producing the espresso's signature crema and concentrated flavor.

 

Brewing

The brewing method is where the distinction between regular coffee and espresso becomes most apparent. This is it, people.

 

Regular Coffee: Brewing methods like drip, pour-over, or French press involve hot water flowing through the coffee grounds, extracting flavor over time. The result is a typically lighter and more voluminous cup of coffee.

 

Espresso: Espresso is made by forcing hot water through finely-ground coffee under high pressure. This process creates a concentrated shot of coffee, topped with a layer of crema – the creamy froth that espresso is famous for. Higher concentrate than traditional coffee, but less volume.

 

Flavor

The flavor profiles of regular coffee and espresso differ significantly due to roasting and brewing techniques as noted above.

 

Regular Coffee: Depending on the roast and origin, regular coffee can have a wide range of flavors, from fruity and acidic to nutty and smooth.

 

Espresso: Generally, espresso has a bolder, more robust flavor. It's often described as rich and intense, with a heavier body and a lingering aftertaste.

 

Is There a Specific "Espresso" Bean?

NO! Contrary to popular belief, there's no specific "espresso" bean. Any coffee bean can be used to make espresso. The term "espresso bean" typically refers to beans that have been roasted and ground specifically for making espresso (such as a very dark roast).

 

In the end, the difference between regular coffee beans and espresso beans comes down to how they're roasted, ground, and brewed. Whether you prefer the gentle allure of a perfectly brewed cup of regular coffee or the intense embrace of a rich espresso shot, it's all about finding the right bean and method that suits your taste.
